RIIHAN305D Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane


Outcome: Nationally recognised statement of attainment


Course Duration: 4-6 hours (experience, competency and class size dependent)

Location: Onsite or offsite, statewide

Pre-requisites: Must be 16 years of age and possess good language, literacy and numeracy skills

What to bring: USI Number ( Biscuits, tea, coffee and drinks are provided. There are many takeaway food options nearby or feel free to bring your own lunch

PPE requirements: Hard hat, safety boots, long pants and Hi Vis short/long sleeve shirt


Unit Descriptor

  • Plan and prepare for gantry/overhead crane operations

  • Operate gantry/overhead crane

  • Perform gantry/overhead crane operator maintenance

This course is designed for an overhead head or gantry crane that has 3 functions (ie north/south, east/west, up/down are 3 functions) or less and is controlled by a remote or pendant.

If the crane has 3 or more powered functions or is operated from a permanent cabin or control station then a TLILIC0016 Licence to Operate a Bridge and Crane CB, HRWL is required.


Application of the Unit

This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to operate a gantry or overhead crane, including planning and preparing and performing operational servicing.

This unit is appropriate for those working in site-based roles.

The work required in this unit relates to the National Standard for High Risk Work but this unit does not provide the licence. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors, and must be sourced prior to application of the unit.
